Wye Valley Brewery is celebrating that its founder, Peter Amor, has been awarded with the title of Honorary Freeman of the City of Hereford. This prestigious accolade, conferred by the City Council, recognises Peter’s outstanding contributions to the city’s economy, the brewing industry both locally and nationally, and his staunch support for local charities.

The inauguration ceremony took place last Saturday, 20th July 2024, at the Council Chamber, Town Hall, Hereford. This honour is the highest distinction the City Council can bestow.

Peter Amor founded Wye Valley Brewery in 1985, and it has since grown into one of Herefordshire’s top employers as well as one of the leading UK breweries. Peter’s passion for good beer and commitment to the UK brewing industry has over the years helped promote Herefordshire’s hop farming heritage. And beyond the brewery, Peter has made significant contributions to local charities including: St Michael’s Hospice, Hereford Sands, Veterans, Royal British Legion and The Little Princess Trust - to name a few!

Pip Preece, Landlady of Wye Valley Brewery’s flagship pub, The Barrels, who has supported Peter with numerous charity events, confirmed: “Over the years, Peter, along with the team at The Barrels, have raised close to 1 Million Pounds.”

Peter Amor in response to this award, said: "I am deeply honoured and humbled to receive this recognition from the City of Hereford. It has been a privilege to serve this community, and I am grateful for the support and opportunities I have had to contribute to its growth and well-being from the very start of our brewing journey at our much-loved spiritual home, The Barrels in Hereford to where we are today. This accolade is not just a personal achievement for me but a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone at Wye Valley Brewery and to our many beer fans."

Wye Valley Brewery continues to thrive under the leadership of Peter’s son, Vernon Amor, maintaining strong partnerships with local charities and supporting community initiatives. Their commitment to sustainability and local engagement remains at the heart of their operations. By using traditional brewing methods and the finest local ingredients, Wye Valley Brewery produces award-winning beers that are enjoyed in pubs throughout the West Midlands and South Wales.

Vernon added: "We are incredibly proud of my father’s achievements and his unwavering dedication to Hereford. His passion for brewing and his commitment to charitable causes have left an indelible mark on our community. This honour is a testament to his hard work and the positive impact he has made over the years. At the brewery we are committed to continuing his legacy and supporting the community in meaningful ways."

The brewery's charitable partnerships with the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust and The Wye and Usk Foundation underscore their dedication to the environment, sustainability and conservation. These partnerships aim to protect local wildlife habitats and promote the health of the rivers, ensuring a lasting positive impact on the environment and the community.
