In beer terms, when you hear the word ‘stout’, what comes to mind?
For many, it conjures up images of an old-fashioned style of dark beer that is warm, heavy, with an unpleasant aftertaste.
So, it will probably surprise a lot of drinkers who like a pint (or two) of Guinness, that they are in fact enjoying a stout.
It may also surprise most beer drinkers that there are many styles of stout. Some are cask beers served at 12°C with little or no head. Some are nitrogenated kegged beers, served cold with a large creamy head. Some are dry, some are sweet. But generally, all stouts have a common characteristic, derived from the use of roasted barley, that gives the distinctive rich chocolate or coffee flavour profile.
So, whether you’re a fan of traditional cask stout or you prefer a colder, creamier style of keg stout, there are plenty of stouts to try.
And, after years of brewing our award-winning ‘Wholesome Stout’ in cask (aka ‘Dorothy Goodbody’s Wholesome Stout’, that has a 5-star rating by revered former editor of The Good Beer Guide, Roger Protz), we decided to flex our stout-making muscles and give it a go in keg.
Enter, Nightjar.
Launched in September 2022, Nightjar boasts all the rich coffee notes and intense roasted barley flavours of our cask stout, but is chilled to 4°C, and has a deliciously creamy texture that makes it a superbly smooth and refreshing pint.
Combined with strong brand design, using an identifiable colour palette of black, white, and gold and premium point-of-sale that includes beautifully designed, Tulip-shaped pint and ½ pint glasses, Nightjar is proving a popular alternative to the UK’s current leading stout brand.
But with increasing costs and tighter margins, we know that decisions on which brands to serve on the bar will ultimately be decided on price. And that’s where Nightjar really sets itself apart from competitor brands. Licensees choosing to serve Nightjar can expect good gross profit margin, without compromising on product quality or brand premiumness.
But we don’t expect you to just take our word for it… Click through below to hear first-hand from some of our trade customers who have made Nightjar a permanent product on their bar and why it’s the only stout they’ll be serving their customers:
